Technology in Education Web Site -- 1:1 computing lessons learned

Just a quick aside to let you know about a US government site that has lots to offer in general, and a paper on 1:1 computing that summarizes the issue, and offers suggestions for those of us who are trying to implement similar programs at our schools. It's the Technology in Education Resource Center. In particular, take a look at Lessons Learned by Providing Laptops for All Students.

Hi Julie,

Two great resources, thank you so much! I would like to implement this type of program in a school. I have thought about writing some type of grant or trying to find out how to become a part of one of these initiatives, but haven't discovered out how yet. I have also thought about starting my own charter school and implementing all types of technology there. Technology doesn't really seem to be a priority for my principal. I'm not sure why. I guess everyone has their own agendas. I, however, love technology and have loved being exposed to all of these new information technologies through this class.

The "Lessons Learned" article brought up many issues to consider when introducing and implementing a 1:1 program. Some that I hadn't thought of. For example, one school decided not to install iTunes on student computers because they thought it would distract students. It also brought up the prodedures for allowing students to take laptops home. What if they forget them? This got me thinking that putting this type of program into place is a lot more difficult than it seems. I will definitely be referring back to these resources. Most of the examples of these programs seem to have been established at middle schools or higher. I would like to view examples of programs instituted at the elementary level. Anyone know of any?
